This was a match that we never thought we would ever get to see.

In 2006, John Cena and AJ Styles featured on the cover of an issue of Pro Wrestling Illustrated along with a headline reading 'Let The War Begin', as TNA was building towards creating some competition for WWE. We all know how that turned out in the end, but a decade ago it seemed that a full-scale battle between TNA and WWE was more likely than an in-ring meeting between Styles and Cena.

Fast forward to the 2016 Royal Rumble. AJ Styles shockingly arrived in WWE, and all of a sudden a whole host of dream matches were on the cards. Styles faced Chris Jericho, Kevin Owens, Roman Reigns and more and, whilst a showdown with Cena was inevitable, not many expected it to happen so soon.

Not only that, but even less expected it to come about as a result of an AJ Styles heel turn. The two went at it in a great contest at Money in the Bank this year, and the biggest potential TNA vs. WWE match was finally in the bag (just with both men under a WWE contract).

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
