There are few sadder tales in wrestling than that of Jake Roberts. He was a man who could have done so much for himself and the business but he blew it because he couldn't handle his demons. Instead of being remembered as one of the greatest ever, he is now viewed as a cautionary tale for the ills of the business. Roberts shot to fame in the cartoon 80s thanks to his unique, whispering interviews, DDT finisher and pet snake, Damien. It was a hell of an act and, although not the most athletic of guys, Roberts had some cracking matches with the likes of Ricky Steamboat and Randy Savage. Jake also had one of the greatest minds for the business and was renowned for his wrestling psychology. Jake didn't need to do a lot out there, and would have had longevity, were it not for his vices. Roberts' battles with drugs and alcohol are well-documented but they are the main reason he didn't achieve what he should have in the WWE. Despite being a WWE Hall of Famer, Roberts never held a title in the company. By rights, he should have been the company's champion and feuded with the top babyfaces on at least one occasion.
