10 Defining Matches That Make People Hate John Cena

5. John Cena vs. Alberto Del Rio - Night Of Champions 2011

Back in August 2011, Alberto Del Rio created a little bit of history when he became the first ever Mexican-born WWE Champion. It was the result of a pretty lengthy push, starting from his debut - when he was hyped up an incredible amount. He had something about him that separated himself from the rest - he was arrogant, cocky, and he could certainly wrestle. Technically brilliant, Del Rio was a breath of fresh air on the main event in the WWE. Even Ricardo Rodriguez was a great addition to the Del Rio gimmick, and he should have been set for a lengthy reign as champion. However, just one month later - at the very next pay-per-view - Del Rio was instead getting buried by John Cena in front of millions of people. It was classic Cena, as he managed to dethrone Del Rio in merciless fashion to win yet another WWE Championship, and simply destroy the push Del Rio had received. Just like Ryback in the Royal Rumble of 2013 - and several others before that - Cena had once again buried an up and coming talent. Has Del Rio ever recovered? That is highly debatable. Sure, he won a couple more major championships, but that match ruined all the momentum he had garnered up until that point.
