10 Disappointing WrestleMania Matches That Should Have Been Classics
8. Chris Benoit Vs. Kurt Angle - WrestleMania 17
Chris Benoit and Kurt Angle are two of the greatest technical wrestlers of all time. No question about it. The two never had a 'bad' match against each other and could probably have put on a decent match in their sleep. Even when Kurt Angle was just a rookie he was better than most wrestlers will ever be and Benoit barely had to guide him during their early clashes. But that's not to say that there haven't been Benoit/Angle disappointments in the past. Their match at WrestleMania X-Seven was probably the most disappointing, for the simple fact that it was WrestleMania and people knew what they were capable of and were dying to see them go at it on the big stage. The two started with some state-of-the-art wrestling before segueing into the usual suplexes and big moves. Angle even busted out his little-seen moonsault for the big occasion. After some water-tight wrestling, Angle won with a cheap roll-up. It was a disappointing finish to what was, on balance, a disappointing match. Again, it's not like the match was bad. Far from it. It's just that fans knew what the two could do out there and they didn't quite deliver it. It probably didn't help that the match was thrown together the week before but still, Angle and Benoit had some genuine classics with similarly weak buildups at Unforgiven 2002 and Royal Rumble 2003.
