10 Fatal Mistakes Of WWE's 2001 Invasion

10. “Stars”

No, we’re not talking about the failure of Vince to hire some of the bigger WCW stars (we’ll get to that in a bit), this all comes down to naming. In the WWF, the talent was (and still is) referred to as “superstars.” When WCW came to their new home, they would not receive the same treatment. No, they were simply “stars”.

Just call them the same thing! When one side is defined as lesser right off the bat, the fans will identify them as such. It was such a dumb and petty thing on Vince’s part, but he couldn’t wait to immediately let us know that the wrestlers that weren't “created” by him can simply not be identified as "super".

It’s silly, because, for example, Diamond Dallas Page was a much bigger star than half of the WWF’s roster ever was. But he wasn’t presented to us as if he was as good as any of them (more on that in a bit as well).

That’s a relatively minor issue in the Invasion angle, but the mistakes are going to get a lot bigger...

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
