10 Greatest WWE SummerSlam PPVs Ever

6. 2009

Another show here that will be best-remembered for its main event (CM Punk vs. Jeff Hardy for the World Heavyweight Championship in a Tables, Ladders and Chairs match). Punk would eventually emerge the victor, but not before Hardy had sealed his spot on the SummerSlam highlight reel with a death-defying Swanton Bomb from atop a ladder and through a prone Punk, who was lying on the announce desk.

Along with all that, the matches on the undercard of 2009’s show gave us a slightly better offering than that of the previous year. The evening kicked off with a brilliant opener between Rey Mysterio and Dolph Ziggler over Intercontinental gold, and D-Generation X met Legacy in a clash that not only spawned those brilliant segments in the build to the show, but also one of the coolest entrances in SummerSlam history, too.

However, the obligatory lowlights came in the form Kane vs. the Great Khali, and an ECW title match between Christian and William Regal that lasted all of 8 seconds.

As is often the case, the conclusion was by far and away the best moment. With Punk celebrating his victory, the arena lights went out and once they came back on again, Hardy’s limp body had been replaced with that of The Undertaker, who was anything but limp as he chokeslammed Punk to announce his return and intention to pursue Punk and his title in the most emphatic of fashions.
