After the loss at Starrcade 1998, it's been argued that Bill Goldberg's career never fully recovered. As WCW marched into 1999, problems were starting to really affect the company from top to bottom. There hadn't really been long-term planning beyond the New World Order, which was a hollow shell of the brilliance from before. Like everyone else, Goldberg's star was affected by what was happening in WCW. Perception of the company was starting to change. The then-WWF had roared back in 1998, once again establishing itself as the top dog in North America pro wrestling. Throughout 1999, Goldberg had relatively poor feuds against the likes of Rick Steiner and Sid. The latter had a baffling winning streak of his own, even though he lost numerous matches on TV during it. None of these rivalries helped Goldberg, and the same can be said of his year-ending feud opposite Bret Hart. At Starrcade '99, Hart defeated Bill, but not before one errant kick would forever change Bret's life. Up until he returned to WWE in 2010, this was the last match Hart wrestled, due to concussion problems stemming from Goldberg's ill-placed boot.
