10 Promising Recent WWE Storylines Which Ultimately Fizzled Out

These storylines had potential, but they did not have the fortune of winning over Vince McMahon.

WWE often treats our emotions like a ten year old treats an unwanted toy. No matter how much we invest and try to buy into storylines and characters, they just don’t care. Which is why so many times we get situations where a certain storyline manages to capture our intrigue, only to be abandoned faster than a Zack Ryder relationship.

The real shame here is that many of these angles had genuine, genuine potential. Whether it was the Raw anonymous GM, or the magical phantom briefcase, or even something as dumb as Vince having an illegitimate child who just so happened to wrestle for his own company, all of them could have led to something truly memorable.

Recent years have been no different. The last five or so have seen no shortage of promising storylines that looked set for landing their mark, before going completely off track faster than the Big Show’s dad’s coffin. And that’s why I’m here now: to recount these unpolished diamonds that were left unpolished, to bathe once more in the despair of what could have been. Because what are we meant to do as WWE fans?

These are 10 promising recent storylines that ultimately fizzled out.

10. The Usos Vs. The Hardy Boyz - 2019

The fact that this hardly got any notice pretty much sums up the abject state of WWE’s tag divisions. However, regardless of Vince’s apathy towards tag teams, this had a big time era vs. era feel to it. And the Usos had even been allowed to mention and call out the Hardyz for weeks during their promos.

The signs were pointing towards a potential clash at WrestleMania 35 and perhaps even a long term feud. Unfortunately, we got none of that. Jimmy and Jey defended their titles at WrestleMania in a randomly put together Fatal Four Way which didn’t even include Matt and Jeff. Now this could still be justified given WrestleMania that year had around 7000 matches.

However, there was no proper feud following ‘Mania either. The Hardyz got a title shot, they won, and then Jeff got injured forcing them to vacate. That was the last we saw the Hardyz together in WWE. And potentially one of the biggest tag team feuds ever was over before it ever really began.

After battling Galactus and pinning Hulk Hogan in the main event of Wrestlemania, I've taken a break from living in fantasy worlds, to focus on writing about them. I'm a comic book geek, a wrestling mark, a break dancer, and a scientist. One of those things may not be true.
