Signed from ECW, Mike Awesome was a supreme physical specimen who had impressed in spot-heavy matches on Paul Heyman's shows. Hopes were high that he'd excel in WCW, but he immediately found himself playing a small role in the ongoing freak show that the promotion provided.

Cutting a backstage promo, he had an altercation with Bam Bam Bigelow. As Ernest 'The Cat' Miller attempted to cut his own interview on an upcoming match against Awesome, Bigelow attacked him. This - somehow - led to a situation whereby Bam Bam was allowed to replace The Cat in the WCW United States Title tournament.

Bigelow and Awesome proceeded to have a match which received some of the best reactions of the evening. Of course, this being WCW, The Cat interfered and booted Bigelow out of the match. Confusingly, Awesome then pinned him to progress in the tournament, even though fans had been told that The Cat had been replaced by Bigelow.

In the middle of all this, The Cat claimed he was going to dance for the audience. There was too much going on here, and fans cared less and less with each passing incident.
