10 Things That Would’ve Happened Had Sting Joined WWE In 2001

4. He Could Have Been The Leader Of The Alliance

Wwf Invasion Many wrestling fans feel it was a mistake to turn Steve Austin heel in 2001. He was still red hot as a babyface, and his turn wasn't even fully accepted by live crowds. It didn't have anywhere near the effect that Hulk Hogan's heel turn had in 1996. Fans were ready to hate Hogan at the time, and many had already started. Fans were not ready to hate Austin just yet. If Sting had come to the WWF right off the bat, a heel turn for Austin might not have happened, as it wouldn't have been necessary. Sting, by all means, should have been the man leading the Alliance. Yes, they were heels, but there were already multiple people in the group getting cheered, anyway, among them being Austin and Rob Van Dam. The fans were cheering for the people they wanted at the time, and not who they were, essentially, told to cheer for. Sting could easily have been the leader of a "heel stable" if it meant he was defending and standing up for WCW and what it stood for. Had the group been led by an honest-to-goodness "WCW guy", you have to think fans would have taken them more seriously. As it was, it was merely a group of "WWF guys" that turned heel. People saw through the entire charade from the start, and reacted as such. The entire storyline probably would have ended up playing out differently with Sting at the helm. That's not saying WCW and the Alliance would have come out victorious in the end (it is a WWF storyline, after all), but things would have been more competitive and more interesting to watch, that's for sure.
