10 Things Wrestling Fans Fully Expected To Happen In 2020 (That Still Haven't)

6. Cena Breaks Flair's Record

It has to happen eventually, right? John Cena might be as good as retired, but that 17th world title might just be the most tempting of carrots for Big Match John. More than three years have passed since that final world title, won in a genuine classic against AJ Styles at the 2017 Royal Rumble, and Cena hasn't been anywhere near the title picture since. Heck, he hasn't really been close to any picture of any kind. Is number 17 going to remain tantalisingly out of his reach?

WWE is famous for obsessively controlling its own history, so having Cena break Ric Flair's record seems more likely than not. This becomes doubly true when you take into account the promotion's other great obsession, that being giving stars of the past world title runs. If Goldberg can win a world championship in 2020, who in their right mind would bet against Cena getting one more run before all is said and done? If you're the gambling type, don't bet on Cena finishing his career on that magical number 16.

Saying that, WWE could fall prey to a rare moment of sentimentality and get all Don Bradman on this, keeping Cena and Flair tied at the top. Time will tell, but it certainly isn't going to happen in 2020. Unless we get Cena vs. Orton at TLC...

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
