The Wrestling Observer's Dave Meltzer has once stated that WWE's purchase of WCW was the worst thing to ever happen to professional wrestling, and given the way things have gone since then, it's hard to argue with him.

WWE aren't quite the monopoly they're made out to be (they do have some minor competitors), but nobody's going to rise up and challenge their market dominance anytime soon. NJPW, the world's second biggest promotion, have a fraction of WWE's global reach, and their 2016 revenue figure was just 4.4% of the market leader's. The gulf is huge, and until a random billionaire shows up and pumps his fortune into another company, WWE will remain safe in their ivory tower.

With nobody to challenge their position, WWE are free to do whatever they want. They can prioritise increased revenues and profits over pleasing the fans because they know that for the most part, there's nowhere else to go. This doesn't mean fans should accept all the nonsense they're thrown by the company, but it does make excessive complaining a futile exercise. WWE have no real reason to change their ways, so why would they?
