Speaking of Hell in a Cell, it would be a shame not to mention the first.

1997 was the year the WWF started to loosen up their relationship with blood, and Shawn Michaels vs. The Undertaker in the inaugural Hell in a Cell match is a shining example. Again, not necessarily notable for the amount of blood spilled, as the crimson mask Shawn donned did more than enough to sell the danger of the new match type. Undertaker just beat the absolute tar out of HBK throughout, and he sold it like a champ.

Shawn may have been at his most unlikable backstage in 1997, but no one could deny that when he was on, he was on. Even when the two brawled outside the cage, seeing Michaels bloodied and helpless expertly communicated to the audience that this man was in deep something, and that he had no hope of escape.

And of course, there was that whole Kane business at the end, but we’re not here for that. We came for blood, and Shawn more than provided... much like in this next match.
