Heading into Uncensored 1997, the war that threatened to rip World Championship Wrestling apart was in full flow. On one hand you have

the New World Order, the virus that was slowly but surely killing WCW. On the other you had Team WCW, comprised of Lex Luger, The Giant and the Steiners, defending the honour of that proud organisation. On the third hand, which presumably could exist in WCW Land, you had Team Piper.

Who was to make up Team Piper? Well, Roddy Piper was to find three teammates. The crowd erupted, happy to see their returning hero, but if they knew what was ahead of them they wouldn’t have been so excited. In one of the worst Nitro segments in memory (an impressive achievement at least), Piper held try-outs, eventually revealing his teammates as John Tenta (Earthquake), Layton Morrison and Craig Malley.

That is underwhelming enough as it is, but one week after the try-outs and one week before the PPV, the three were replaced by Chris Benoit, Steve McMichael and Jeff Jarrett of the Four Horsemen. It is probably a good reason that Piper and his original team discarded with, but holy moly was this pointless.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
