10 Wrestlers Who Saved World Championships
7. Io Shirai - NXT Women's Championship
The NXT Women's Championship has swapped hands several times in 2020. After Shayna Baszler's second reign with the NXT women's title didn't quite live up to the mastery of the first, Rhea Ripley was tasked with carrying the division. She had a very good match with Bianca Belair at TakeOver Portland, but dropped the belt to Royal Rumble winner Charlotte Flair in a controversial booking decision.
This had a lot of potential to be something interesting, as Charlotte is a wonderful heel and could have easily had wonderful matches and stories with the NXT women. Yet, she dropped the belt to Io Shirai within two months of WrestleMania and left, making the title feel directionless despite the delight from fans that Io had reached the top.
Thankfully, Io Shirai has provided the title with much needed stability, having successful acclaimed defences against Dakota Kai, Candice LeRae and Tegan Nox and proving herself as the most reliable worker on the black and yellow brand. No matter who beats her, it will feel significantly important as she's helped elevate the division and the title with her wonderful performances.
