10 Wrestlers Who Should Have Been Megastars By Now – But Aren’t
7. Kevin Owens
After beating John Cena in his very first main roster match, Kevin Owens looked destined for a whole new level of superstardom. Until, of course, Cena got his win back on the very next pay-per-view, before going on to win the rubber match at Battleground and in doing so win the feud.
Those back-to-back defeats pretty much nullified the impact of his initial win and checked Owens’ momentum somewhat. In the coming weeks, he gradually started slipping down the card and into the Intercontinental title scene, which is by no means a disaster but it’s certainly not on par with defeating the company poster boy.
Since then, he did go on to win the Universal Championship and hold it for some six months, but it was a somewhat underwhelming reign. Plus, losing to Goldberg in a matter of seconds hardly elevated him to megastar status.
Somehow you get the feeling that if Owens hadn’t lost to Cena in that three-match series, he’d have been too valuable a commodity to have been fed to Goldberg in an absolute squash.
