At ECW One Night Stand 2006, Rob Van Dam defeated John Cena in one of the most feelgood championship victories of all time. Here was a guy who, despite being eternally beloved by fans, had never been given the trust of the top brass. Now, he was on top of the world... for about three weeks.
On July 3rd 2006, Van Dam (real name Robert Szatkowski) was arrested in Hanging Rock, Ohio. Initially pulled over for speeding, police then found a series of drugs and drug-related paraphernalia in Van Dam's car. This should come as no surprise to anyone who knows anything about RVD. Let's just say the top turnbuckle isn't the only way he gets high.
WWE's response was swift and brutal. Within 48 hours, Van Dam lost both the WWE and ECW Championships and was promptly suspended. He was never given a World title ever again. Would the promotion have been this harsh on one of their self-appointed stars? Guess we'll never know.
