10 Wrestling Questions With Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly's Sam Duckworth
1. Surpassing The Attitude Era
Would it be fair to say that - given the current wrestling scene that’s going on right now - we’re heading towards an era as good as (if not better) than the Attitude Era?
"I think we’re already in the beginnings of that [...] The best matches that have happened in the history of wrestling have happened in New Japan in the last eighteen months, ALL IN is the biggest independent pay-per-view in years, PROGRESS coming very close to selling out Wembley Arena, you’ve got ICW in Glasgow doing very similar, you’ve got Defiant [in Newcastle], you’ve got RevPro, all the stuff in Birmingham… maybe the Attitude Era is about wrestling hitting that peak, but it comes from the UK.
As a music parallel, a lot of artists are moving away from labels or doing things differently. Jorja Smith’s a really great example: wildly successful, really good, complete new model, and if that can happen in wrestling, great. [...] I just don’t know why - after ALL IN - you wouldn’t want to give it a shot?
I listen to interviews with wrestlers a lot, and the ones who have control over their schedules and have the ability to have time off are so much happier than those that don’t, and I just don’t understand. If you’re having a great time and you’re making a good living and you’re able to have choice... I don’t know, it’d be cool if the new wrestling revolution was the idea that the alternative was mainstream and independent like there is in music."
