10 WWE Gimmick Matches That Totally Sucked
9. Blindfold Match
Can a match be both underrated and awful at the same time? As Jake Roberts and Rick Martel proved at WrestleMania VII, absolutely.
The match generated tremendous crowd response and was far more intelligently crafted than it typically gets credit for. The psychology is fantastic. Unfortunately, it is also slow, plodding and bankrupt of anything event remotely considered action. Only late, when Roberts dropped Martel with his famed DDT, did the bout resemble an actual exercise in sports-entertainment.
Too much of the bout was spent putting over the gimmick itself, robbing fans of a satisfying blowoff to the intensely personal story that preceded it. The same can be said of just about any other blindfold match in wrestling history. Comedy and spectacle overtakes wrestling, keeping the match from ever advancing past "mediocre" in quality.
