10 WWE Gimmicks That Are Broken
6. Bray Wyatt - Backwoods Cult Leader
Bray Wyatt’s maniacal cult leader gimmick is one that could have done gangbusters during the Attitude Era. At a time when crucifixions and magic powers were commonplace, fans were more willing to buy into the idea that a wrestler could channel the forces of fire and lightning, and the then-WWF was more willing to label its gimmicks honestly.
Modern day WWE will never admit that Wyatt is a cult-leader, nor will they fully embrace some of the darker sides of his character. It’d be unreasonable to expect Michael Cole to start talking about mass suicides, or positioning Bray as the Jim Jones/Max Cady wannabe he so clearly is, but unimaginative scripting and these creative compromises have led to a woefully watered down Wyatt Family.
Bray’s supposed ability to shoot sub-par lightning VFX at the audience was laughable, as was his most recent trick of projecting worms and maggots onto the canvas. It was a neat image, but it’s impossible to believe in this day and age. We’d be scared of a legitimate cult leader who gets by on charisma and manipulation alone, but Bray is little more than a pantomime caricature at this point, with very few followers to speak of.
