10 WWE Legends Who Tapped Out To Kurt Angle
5. Edge - No Mercy 2002
A match featuring four of the SmackDown six is always going to be good, but this one defied all expectations. What looks on paper like a simple tag team championship bout turned into a proper thrill ride, an exhausting, all-energy encounter that stands among the best matches for four incredibly accomplished superstars.
Chris Benoit and Kurt Angle took on Edge and Rey Mysterio to become the inaugural SmackDown tag champs. On paper it’s good, but in the ring it’s incredible. These four men had amazing chemistry with one another, however you wished to pair them up. They all look as though they have a point to prove: while Angle had experience of being the top guy, the other three were on the way up. They all eventually wound up holding the main belts of the business, and it’s matches like this that helped seal that deal.
It’s Edge who ends up succumbing to Angle’s ever-lethal ankle lock, but watching this match cold, it could have gone in any direction. The fans are hotter than hell, convinced the finish is coming many times over. The Wrestling Observer named it match of the year, and rightly so: it’s about as fun as wrestling gets.
