Bob Backlund's first title reign came in 1978; his second began some sixteen years later, in an 'old generation vs. new generation' feud with Bret Hart.

At Survivor Series 1994, Backlund beat Bret in a 'throw in the towel' match, after aligning with his opponent's heel brother Owen. The younger Hart attacked Bret during the match, and played an influential role in the finish, convincing their mother Helen to throw in the towel and cost the champion his belt.

Ultimately, WWE were merely using Backlund as a transitional champion, as he would drop the belt just three days later to Diesel...
