8. William Regal In AEW
You'd struggle to find a classier, more respected veteran currently active in the industry than one William Regal. Honouring that, Regal refused to bury AEW or Tony Khan when he decided being #AllElite wasn't for him after all and returned to a backstage role under Triple H in WWE at the start of 2023. His 2022 run in AEW had been a mixed bag.
It definitely got off to a flyer. Regal debuted at Revolution in March that year and forced Jon Moxley and Bryan Danielson to shake hands. The Blackpool Combat Club was born, and it looked destined to be the best faction AEW had ever crafted. Then, in November at Full Gear, Sir William helped MJF defeat Moxley and the BCC splintered.
Regal bowed out in early-December by saying he'd taught the stable everything they needed to know. That was a wrap on his All Elite run. By January, the celebrated Brit was back behind the curtain on WWE's side offering up his vast experience and knowledge to anyone who'd listen. It was like the AEW sprint hadn't even happened.
Blink and you'll miss it. That sort of thing.
It did happen though, and it never felt right after that initial hot start at Revolution. Regal had been with WWE since 2000, and he'd become entrenched in the market leader's way of doing things. Granted, he's smart enough to work anywhere, but even hardcore AEW fans could sense that his heart was never truly with Khan's company.
The rumours about a jump back to WWE under good pal Hunter proved to be true. All was right with the world (of wrestling) again.
