20 Most Horrifically Stupid Things That Ever Happened In WCW

12. The Fat Chick Thriller

The first Monday Nitro of the Bischoff and Russo era aired on 10 April 2000, and it was notable for a number of reasons - not the least of which was the WCW debut of reigning ECW World Champion Mike Awesome. Awesome's introduction was as impactful as it was noteworthy, as he immediately attacked Kevin Nash and became one of the New Blood's most powerful members.

In the months to follow, he would feud with Nash and Hulk Hogan, taking the moniker of "The Career Killer". However, after being unable to wrest the United States Championship away from Scott Steiner, Awesome had a change of heart. He became less focused on inflicting pain and more concerned with romancing heavyset women - gone was "The Career Killer", and in his place stood "The Fat Chick Thriller". In between dalliances with Nitro Girl Beef, Awesome attempted to win the U.S. Title from Lance Storm.

Again, he was unsuccessful, and the silly gimmick change caused his momentum to plummet. Recognizing the problem, WCW knew Awesome needed yet another retooling. In September 2000, he would feather his famous mullet, don a powder-blue leisure suit, and become "That '70s Guy", entering arenas in a Partridge Family-style tour bus.

For some reason, this new character also failed to catch on with fans. Awesome was turned heel again (this time, joining Lance Storm as "The Canadian Killer"), and adopted a more serious attitude, but the damage had already been done. Whoever came up with the idea of "The Fat Chick Thriller" could lay claim to being the real career killer.
