After being the focal point of three separate entries on the list, and a background player of many others, it should be very clear that 2016 was AJ Styles's year.

From his debut at the Royal Rumble and his WrestleMania match with Chris Jericho to the show-stealing main events of the spring with Roman Reigns and his summertime rivalry with John Cena, AJ Styles would've probably been satisfied if the year ended at SummerSlam. Turns out, that was just the preamble.

On 11 September, 2016, AJ Styles made history by becoming the 48th WWE Champion.

AJ's in-ring work cannot be denied. His persistence and dedication to his craft finally opened WWE's eyes to him and the company announced his signing in early 2016.

Considering WWE's long history of not acknowledging, much less promoting, any talent formerly associated with rival promotion TNA, it was a surprise to see AJ Styles even enter a WWE ring. For him to have the year that he had, including the aforementioned multiple victories over John Cena, it had to culminate with winning the WWE Championship.

Given WWE's history towards non-home-grown talent and AJ Styles's close association with TNA, The Phenomenal One capturing the most coveted title in all of pro-wrestling is the most unbelievable moment of a wild and crazy 2016.
