25 Worst Wrestling Moments Of 2020

1. “Black Wednesday”

Drake Maverick
WWE

WWE earned a lot of goodwill for entertaining wrestling fans locked away at home with 2 nights of 'Mania fun over 4-5 April 2020, but the promotion instantly flushed all of that away come 15 April. That day would become known as "Black Wednesday" - dozens of shocked wrestlers and staff members were released during one of the most uncertain times in modern human history.

The COVID pandemic had just started, and fear was the word on everyone's lips. Imagine compounding that with sudden unemployment. It was totally depressing, and footage of stressed out workers like Drake Maverick struggling to comprehend the death of a dream hit home hard. The man looked totally broken as he addressed fans. He'd be back, but that one hurt.

It was a dark day for WWE and pro wrestling. Officially, "budget cuts" were cited as the main reason for so many releases. That left a sour taste in the mouths of fans worldwide, because Vince McMahon's organisation was still printing money and had secured money-spinning TV rights deals to keep the coffers healthy.

No, they couldn't sell tickets for WrestleMania 36, but WWE wasn't short of cash. So, seeing so many hardworking men and women cast out into an increasingly terrifying world felt cold and completely at odds with the family vibes presented on social media and on programming.

Thankfully, most involved were alright in the end.
