3 Ups And 5 Downs From Last Night's WWE SmackDown (July 9)

3. Randy Orton Hitting RKOs On Losers Is Always Fun

The longevity of the RKO or Diamond Cutter as a finishing move has been pretty amazing. Orton has been doing it on TV for over a decade and Diamond Dallas Page did it on TV for about a decade before him too. People still love the move as much anything in wrestling, which is great because it can create entertaining moments such as what Orton did to The Ascension on Smackdown. Orton was out there doing a promo of Sheamus, who wasn't on Smackdown. Perhaps he was filming scenes for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film he's in because he was tweeting about it this week. Anyway, Orton just threatened him to continue their rivalry and looked like he was going to leave when The Ascension showed up. The Ascension have become a parody of what they were supposed to be, which was a dominating tag team. Instead of fearing them, people laugh at them. Orton didn't really like seeing them interrupt him, so hitting RKOs on Konnor and Viktor was enjoyable to watch. What this segment proved is you don't always need a match to put over a move or a wrestler. A confrontation works because it was simple in nature and led to a satisfying ending.
