7 Occupational WWE Gimmicks That Were Really Stupid
5. Thurman "Sparky" Plugg
"My name is Thurman Plugg, but my friends they call me Sparky! You can call me Sparky too." When Bob Holly started in WWE his original name was Thurman "Sparky" Plugg. The character was supposed to be a NASCAR style driver that conveniently happened to be a pro wrestler too. He was actually going to be called "Sparky" Thurman Plugg because of the STP motor oil, but they decided against that. Yeah WWE, because that would have been dumb! Even though he started out as Thurman they ended up calling him Bob "Spark Plug" Holly and that's the name that stuck with him for a while. The question that immediately comes to mind is why did WWE think a car racer gimmick was going to work? Maybe they realized that NASCAR was a growing sport, so the thinking was they could bring in NASCAR fans? There were better ways to do that. Instead, they figured they would make a car driving wrestler. It didn't work. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-pTpWJ7JCo Kudos to Bob Holly for re-inventing himself as Hardcore Holly and carving out a nice career in spite of the fact that he had to use the "Sparky Plugg" gimmick. Can we still call him Sparky?
