7 Reasons I Regret Staying Up To Watch WWE Payback 2016

1. The Mess That Was The Main Event

Well, where oh where to begin.

In the main event of the show, Roman Reigns defended his WWE World Championship against AJ Styles. The build to the match centred around Styles and his newly-arrived in WWE buddies Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows. Would they help Styles pick up the win? Would they turn on him and allow Reigns to walk out as champion? Where does Finn Balor fit into all of this?

The questions were numerous, and the questions were all full of intrigue. As it transpired, the match gave us two schmozz finishes that were more about showcasing yet another McMahon power struggle and did a grand total of nothing for the two men in the main event.

Styles won by count out, then he won by disqualification. Then, and only then did Gallows and Anderson get involved, which brought out the Usos as gang warfare took over. Reigns managed to pick up the win in the end, and the show ended with Shane and Stephanie discussing the main event of the next PPV.

I stayed up all night to watch a nothing finish in a main event that promised much, all night to see more dissension between two siblings that I've seen arguing on my screen for almost two decades. The light at the end of the tunnel may yet be the end of the tether yet.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
