7 Reasons Kevin Owens Must Beat Goldberg At WWE Fastlane 2017

3. The Fallacy Of The 'Inexperienced Young Star' Needs To End

In many ways, Kevin Owens vs. Goldberg is a match that sums up the schizophrenic demands of a WWE that seems to simultaneously be way out of touch whilst keeping its finger firmly on the pulse. Younger performers are constantly told that they need to grab the brass ring and take positions in the main event, whilst all the while the stars of the past waltz back in to those spots quicker than the average Goldberg match.

Kevin Owens vs. Goldberg is the extreme of this. Owens is the brash young star staring at the glass ceiling and wondering what he needs to do to break through it, whereas Goldberg is the veteran from long ago who will turn up five nights a year and become an incredibly rich man in the process.

But in this instance Kevin Owens is quite clearly the veteran. The current Universal Champion has wrestled more matches in the last two years than Goldberg has in his entire career. Owens made his pro wrestling debut less than three years after Goldberg, and when you take into account the 12 years Goldberg spent away from the business this all means that Owens has the overwhelming experience advantage.

Not that this will be brought up, but the truth is that Kevin Owens vs. Goldberg isn't the new vs. old that it may well be framed as. On one side of the ring is an experienced head who knows his game inside and out, a champion and former champion who knows how to win. On the other side of the ring is Goldberg.

Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
