7 Ups & 7 Downs From Last Night's WWE SmackDown (Nov 20)
1. What's Going On With Charlotte?
It's hard to know how we're supposed to take Charlotte Flair after last night's show, so muddied was her presentation.
'The Queen' kicked things off by torching Ronda Rousey with a heel promo. She was in good form, and came off as something close to the best version of herself, seemingly cementing her villainous Survivor Series turn.
Then The IIconics showed up.
And then Charlotte was suddenly a babyface again.
Flair worked face throughout both bouts, battling against a two-on-one disadvantage as Peyton Royce and Billie Kay constantly interjected themselves into the other's matches. That's fine, provided WWE wanted to portray Charlotte as a valiant, sympathetic fighter, but they had just penned a promo script that put her over as a piece of sh*t. The change in tone was too vast for her to be considered an effective tweener as well.
Topping things off was the post-match angle, which portrayed Charlotte as a monster face after simultaneously overcoming both IIconics and standing tall. A WWE apologist might say the company no longer adhere to the traditional alignment scale, but this feels like a cop-out for bad writing, and it'll be interesting to see if Charlotte's inconsistencies are ironed out next week.
