7. The Right Way To Do It

Last week, this column highlighted (or better, lowlighted) WWE€™s partnership with Susan G. Komen for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. One of the biggest criticisms (aside from the charity itself) was stopping the show dead in its tracks so WWE could pat itself on its collective back (in the center of the ring) for caring about breast cancer. The big criticism was using the show itself instead of a bumper commercial to highlight the company€™s involvement. Monday, that€™s exactly what WWE did, having Roman Reigns stand with a young breast cancer survivor and talking about how she fought and how Komen offers community programs to raise awareness. The survivor mentioned how she detected it and got treated. That is exactly how WWE should be promoting its relationship with Komen. If they want to have pink ring ropes as an outward symbol, fine, fans can live with it. But keep the preaching to pre-produced segments like that outside the scope of the regular show. That little separation is enough to not take you out of the moment, and it doesn€™t halt the show for self-kudos.
