AJ Styles' rookie year in WWE was pretty incredible, to say the least.

Despite falling short of victory versus Chris Jericho in his WrestleMania debut, he achieved great success that year between beating John Cena on two occasions and winning the WWE Championship from Dean Ambrose. He was also positioned prominently as the face of SmackDown Live for a while, so he ended 2016 on the highest of notes.

Cena vs. Styles would have been an ideal main event for WrestleMania given their history, but WWE ended up bumping the bout to the Royal Rumble. There, they contested a classic that concluded with Cena finally defeating Styles to become world champion for the 16th time in his career.

It was the perfect WrestleMania moment... except it didn't happen at WrestleMania.

Cena dropped the title two weeks later at Elimination Chamber while Styles settled into a program with Shane McMahon. It was far from a bad spot for Styles to be in at WrestleMania, but he and Cena would have been better suited for the main event over Roman Reigns vs. The Undertaker.

The same can be said for WrestleMania 34, where Styles' title defense against Shinsuke Nakamura took a backseat to Reigns vs. Brock Lesnar. There's still time for Styles to score that elusive main event match, but his best chances may be behind him.
