5. Pete Dunne Finishes The Job

Last night was all about Pete Dunne. He’s one of the hottest prospects in wrestling at the moment, and WWE are smart to build the tournament around him. From starring in PWG’s Battle of Los Angeles to becoming PROGRESS Champion, 2016 was Dunne’s breakout year, and The Bruiserweight now stands on the precipice of greatness.

He took care of Roy Johnson in his first round match, but the real talking point came towards the night’s end. As Nigel McGuinness and William Regal previewed the next round, Dunne dashed across the stage, took out Sam Gradwell (his next opponent), and left him for dead. He was soon pulled away and admonished by Regal, but Dunne took a huge risk, and made a name for himself. Whether Regal likes it or not, Dunne’s actions made him the centre of attention, and only strengthened his status as the tournament favourite.

Gradwell was filmed visibly limping after the show, and there are huge question marks on his condition heading into tonight’s match. Injury or no injury, he’ll be out for blood after what Dunne did to him, but he’s going to find it incredibly hard going. Dunne might be the best heel in the country at the moment, and he’s a vicious, unforgiving opponent who gives his opponents no quarter between the ropes. Don’t expect the underdog to overcome the odds here.
