5. Running The Gauntlet

During the past several weeks, numerous superstars have stepped up to voice their desire to vie for the Intercontinental Championship at WrestleMania 40. That led to a fear that WWE could run a multi-man match, which would be a terrible way to end Gunther’s reign, and could be a lame cheat code if he’s going to retain.

Instead, it looks like fans could be getting a really good one-on-one match that would have show-stealing capabilities. Raw GM Adam Pearce announced Monday that next week, six wrestlers will compete in a gauntlet match to determine Gunther’s opponent: Sami Zayn, Ricochet, Shinsuke Nakamura, Bronson Reed, JD McDonagh and Chad Gable.

Given that field, Zayn and Gable are the logical two favorites. Either man could have a masterpiece with Gunther, albeit very different matches. It’s certainly a better development than a ladder match or some mad scramble with five challengers trying to pin each other while Gunther chops everyone.

But as with most things, we still have to see how things play out next week to fully assess.
