Before you roll your eyes and mutter here we go again just wait this isnt just a criticism of Cenas refusal to turn heel, but his outright refusal to change his character in any shape or form. He has been the same character for over ten years and it was starting to wear thin just six months into his first WWE title run. Cena didnt have to turn heel (since he has clearly stated he isnt interested in doing so), but a change to his character doesnt have to mean a turn to the dark side, just a tweak here and there to keep it fresh. There have been numerous moments a John Cena heel turn could have absolutely electrified WWE and his career; his feud with The Rock, Money In The Bank 2011 or even more recently he could have joined up with Triple H and The Authority. Yes, its always sad when a face turns against the fans and the children who support Cena so fiercely will be devastated, but that leaves the door open for a new hero to rise up such as Daniel Bryan or Roman Reigns. When Stone Cold turned heel in 2001, fans turned to The Undertaker, Chris Jericho and The Rock, and at one stage even Kurt Angle (known for being a spectacular heel). Some of Cenas best moments in his career came in the early days when he was rapping and pushing the boundaries with his heel gimmick, and its the reason fans gravitated to him in the first place. Its just a shame he never saw his character problems from the view of the fans and considering he constantly states how much he appreciates the fans, it comes across as hollow and selfish when he wont give them what they want especially since he frequently mocks them for it. With WWE pushing Roman Reigns as their next big superstar, there is the smallest of chances that he will be able to replace John Cena at the top and fans may well get that heel turn theyve been clamouring for.
