John Cena's 10 Most Notorious Urban Legends

4. He Buried The Nexus At SummerSlam 2010

Story: It was SummerSlam 2010 with John Cena leading team WWE against Team Nexus in a 7 on 7 elimination match in the main event of the show. The Nexus were a group of young wrestlers that should have went over strong in a match like that, but instead they lost. Why? Because of Super Cena. With the match at 2 to 1 for The Nexus, Cena took a DDT on the floor and miraculously recovered to beat Justin Gabriel and Wade Barrett to win the match for his team. The match was the subject of a discussion between Chris Jericho and Edge during an episode of Jericho's "Talk Is Jericho" podcast from earlier this year. They were on Cena's team in the match, so if anybody was going to know the backstage story it was them. Here's what they had to say about it. Jericho: "John wanted to do things a certain way and we told him 'you're wrong'. Remember that? And he did it anyways, and it sucked. And then afterwards he came over to us and said 'I should have listened to you, but I wasn't seeing it that way. And sometimes you just don't see it that way, you know?" Edge: "It's one of those things...where he was adamant about what he wanted to do. And I remember, I was like, 'fine, I'm out of the match by that point'." Jericho: "Exactly. He wanted to get DDT'd on the floor by Barrett, then kick out and beat them both. And you and I were like, 'that's the dumbest thing. That's just throwing it away for no reason'." Edge: "They should have gone over because they were so hot." That's how they explained it. Cena got the win for his team. The storyline continued for a few more months, but after The Nexus lost that SummerSlam match it really wasn't the same for them after that. Why People Believe It: They saw it at SummerSlam. Cena was made to look like Superman and he beat two guys to win the match for his team. The momentum of The Nexus was stopped. Should We Believe It: Yes. While we have no idea what Vince McMahon or members of WWE Creative have to say about it, the insight provided by Jericho and Edge paints the picture of Cena wanting to do things his way. It also makes us wonder if Cena did things like that in the past. He probably did. We just don't know about it.
