In ye olden days of the late 90's and early 00's, the Divas division was one of the crown jewels in WWE's live show. Ahhhhhh, how the men cheered and hollered like dogs for Bra and Panties matches, Lingerie Pillow Fights, Thanksgiving Day Wrestling In A Gravy Bowl matches... In all seriousness, whether it was the stellar wrestling put forward by Trish Stratus, Mickie James and Lita or the blatant exercises in titillation by the rest, you can't deny it was at least entertaining. These days, a Divas match on the card basically translates to "pee break". It's not because they're less talented, by any means. AJ Lee, Natalya, Naomi and Alicia Fox are some of the best females WWE has ever had on board. It's lack of direction. Divas get virtually NO storylines, the only one they've trusted to carry a script is AJ. So matches are thrown together with no thought other than to fill space. When you have Total Divas showing nothing but interaction between these women to possibly set up rivalries or grudges they could settle in the ring, it just seems a waste. Speaking of Total Divas, we know certain Divas are associated with certain Superstars (the Bella's with Cena and Bryan, Natalya with Tyson Kidd, Naomi with Jimmy Uso...) and yet this is never addressed on screen to lend Superstar or Diva some weight to a rivalry. In fact, when Daniel Bryan was kidnapped by the Wyatt's last year, it was downright IGNORED so Brie Bella could get some football players autograph (can't remember who he was, don't care) Is it too much to ask to have his girlfriend worried over what might happen to her little billy goat?? The Divas division has a wealth of talent. And with the recent calling up of Summer Rae and Emma, and the likes of Paige, Charlotte and Raquel Diaz waiting to make an appearance on the flagship, its only going to get stronger. Just please, PLEASE give them something to do or say, because AJ cant carry the division forever.
Stephen Maher has been a rock star, a bouncer, a banker and a busker on various streets in various countries. He's hung out with Robert Plant, he was at Nelson Mandela's birthday and he's swapped stories with prostitutes and crack addicts. He once performed at a Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras by accident. These days, he passes the time by writing about music, wrestling, games and other forms of nerdery. And he rarely drinks the blood of the innocent.
