That's not to say that things would be any better if Punk won gold in Paris.

Rollins pulled some heist at SummerSlam by revealing his injury as a fake and cashing in MITB, so he’d look all kinds of dumb if he then dropped the title during his first PLE defence. It won’t happen, but someone in creative may fight for the idea of booking a complete shock that gives Punk some shine. Think Michael Hayes coming up with Jey Uso as a Royal Rumble winner (as shown on WWE Unreal).

That came from left field, which shows that Triple H isn't dead set against springing surprises nobody sees coming. Punk upsetting Rollins and leaving France with the World Heavyweight Title in his hands would be a major shock, especially considering Clash In Paris is accepted as a 'B' tier PLE before it even happens. No-one's gonna grumble if there aren't any title switches, basically.

The city's wrestling fans just want to have a good time, see some top stars and cheer/boo their way through some pulsating matches. Even the giddiest Punk super fan would have to relent that sticking the title back on him so soon after SummerSlam heartbreak would be silly at this point.

His story with Seth needs to let that wound fester for a while longer. Then, whether it's inside Hell In A Cell or all the way off into the distance at WrestleMania 42, Punk can give Rollins ultimate comeuppance in a singles setting.

More sad, puppy dog eyes Phil is incoming. It has to be this way.
