WWE Roadblock: End Of The Line - 11 Things WWE Got Right

2. The Roman Empire Falls Just Short

The main event was a plodding affair, Kevin Owens flitting between slow-working heat seeker and super indy performer whilst Roman Reigns did what Roman Reigns does. The match was hurt by the sheer ambivalence of the crowd, a crowd who only roused from their slumber when Chris Jericho eventually came out to inevitably interfere.

What is important coming out of this match is that Roman Reigns failed to win the Universal Championship. Ever since his suspension and subsequent 'demotion' in the summer, Reigns has consistently fallen short, and whilst there is a certain inevitability to his return to the top of the mountain, the longer it is put off the better.

Reigns is in a dangerous place right now. The US Championship could become a career-saver if he is positioned as a fighting champion, but actively booking him as being above the strap makes little sense for either. The crowd is clearly tired of him in the main event too.

Owens retaining was the right choice, arguably the only choice.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
