10 Anti-Valentine’s Day Comics

8. The Strange Talent Of Luther Strode - Justin Jordan & Tradd Moore

Lutherstrode Luther Strode is your ordinary high school geek. Skinny and with glasses, he wants to get muscles to intimidate his bullies, fight off his physically abusive dad and get the girl of his dreams, so he responds to an ad on the back of a comic for The Hercules Method to give him strength. But this isn't some cheap Charles Atlas ad, it's the real deal as Luther finds out when he gains super-strength and becomes the Avatar of Violence! This is a comic featuring a superhero punching through human flesh like ordinary people walk through air. Spines are ripped out with one hand while skulls are crushed with the other. The body count goes up and up and up as the story goes on until the pages are drenched in blood. If you thought Kick Ass was brutal, Luther Strode demolishes the ceiling and finds a new level of gore for comics. And it's a really good story too - this is the book that got Justin Jordan and Tradd Moore contracts with DC and Marvel. Luther Strode is adolescent male power fantasy fully realised, and it doesn't pretend to be otherwise. It's too awesome to care.
