Before the Avengers were household names, and long before people were even batting an eye towards the Guardians of the Galaxy or anyone like that, the Fantastic Four were the money maker at Marvel, along with Spider-Man of course. As such, these powerhouses were teamed up regularly since the sixties.

Spider-Man originally tried to join the Fantastic Four in 1963 when he was job hunting and figured that they would pay well for his contribution to the team. Sadly, the foursome don't make money from their work. Spidey just up and left straight away after that.

In spite of an awkward first encounter, the superheroes remained friends, especially Peter and Johnny Storm, the Human Torch. The two were kindred spirits, and even ended up living together at one point, although that didn't last too long. And so, with their friendship in mind, it was a huge honour for the Fantastic Four to invite Spider-Man into their team after Johnny's demise.

In the comic Fantastic Four #576, Reed Richards assembled a team of Earth's best and brightest in the hopes of creating a better future for humanity. Many brainiacs were invited to join including, of course, Spider-Man. Peter accepted the offer into the new Fantastic Four, renamed the Future Foundation, and although he would never replace the Human Torch, his position on the team meant a great deal to them all.

Spider-Man finally got into the Fantastic Four, and honoured the Human Torch's memory and legacy.
