10 Crazy Comic Books Way Better Than They Had Any Right To Be

9. Deadpool's Secret Secret Wars

Superior Spider Man
Marvel Comics

The idea of taking Deadpool and just inserting him into a classic Marvel story seems as bonkers as it does lazy. How little imagination does the writer need to tell a story that's been told but with Deadpool shoehorned in?

Amazingly, though that is very much the premise of the miniseries Deadpool's Secret Secret Wars, it actually works pretty well. Instead of a lazy story, the reader is delivered one that's revitalising and engaging, but with all of the humor we expect from Deadpool. Marvel continuity proves to be a fertile playground for the Merc with the Mouth, and he almost fits right in.

The idea of the series is that Deadpool was just off panel for the entire original Secret Wars arc. However, it expands past that premise, and that is the point where things get really interesting. With Deadpool as the sole surviving secret warrior on the side of good, the series bounces in time as it follows his attempts to revive the dead heroes.

Surprisingly enough, character is at the center of this story which could easily have just focused on the silly gimmick and been a wacky romp. Instead, Wade Wilson's romances and personal struggles are the driving force which keeps the train going. Deadpool's Secret Secret Wars has a lot of humor and a lot of heart along with a butt load of Easter eggs and clever retcons which all together make it fun read.
