1. Gotham

Superman once said “I’m not particularly fond of Gotham. It’s like someone built a nightmare out of metal and stone.” It says something when the Man of Steel was apprehensive about the city. The original Gotham Town was established in 1635 by a Norwegian Mercenary. It was eventually taken by the British and was the site of a major battle in the Revolutionary War.

The city became overrun with corruption from the beginning. Greedy businessmen, corrupt politicians, and many crooked police commissioners have always plagued the city. Only the Wayne family and their philanthropic endeavors have kept Gotham from failing and the ever-growing army of Batman and his family and associates have kept the insanity at bay. Gotham once fell completely after a 7.6 earthquake left it cut off from the country by governmental decree. The remaining citizens had to count on gangs for survival in this “No Man’s Land.”

The city hosted a strange style of architecture that created areas of darkness even in the broad daylight. Hundreds of dark alleys dead end with nowhere to go. Gangs battled violently over a few blocks of sidewalk and there were actual monsters in the sewers. To live in Gotham was to live in fear.
