1. Having Your Body Taken Over By Doc Ock

One of Spider-Man's oldest enemies who has been around for most of his career is Dr. Otto Octavius, otherwise known as Doc Ock. While the villain may have started out somewhat small and was usually stopped by a good bop on the head, but over time, he became more.

His genius intellect led him to develop more dangerous tentacles, which he used in his villainous schemes. He became more of a threat as time went on, but he also degraded physically as well. By The Amazing Spider-Man #700, he was a withered husk of a man... but he had a plan.

Doc Ock managed to swap his consciousness into Peter Parker's body and vice-versa. This left Peter in a dying body, and he did apparently die. Ock then took over Pete's life and became the "Superior Spider-Man," which saw him take over the city and even complete Pete's Ph.D.

All the while, Pete's consciousness tried to retake control of his body but was repeatedly kicked down by Octavius' dominance. Throughout this time, Pete had to witness the destruction of his life (not for the first time) while being completely impotent to stop it, which is a fate few would choose over death.
