8. Batwoman’s Relationship Disaster

When a relationship is so beloved that its forced desolation caused two creators to quit in the real world, it’s easy to understand the upheaval it caused in the life of Batwoman. She is Kate Kane, a former decorated West Point cadet who was kicked out for being a lesbian. After being inspired by Batman and an extensive training course by her colonel father, she became Batwoman.

Kate met Maggie Sawyer, the head of the Gotham City Police Department Major Crimes Unit at a Police Charity Ball and the two began dating and, at one point, moved in together. Batwoman even asks Captain Sawyer to marry her. But in Batwoman # 34, Kate moves out. She made a deal with Maggie’s homophobic ex-husband to leave so that the man would drop his bid for full custody of his and Maggie's daughter. Kate broke up with Maggie in a letter.

Publisher Dan Didio claimed the reason that Kate and Maggie couldn’t get married was that taking up the cape and cowl meant giving up their personal lives to be heroes. And yet, they inexplicably had The Phantom Stranger get married and have two children. Additionally, there had been a number of successful DC marriages for years. Also, that doesn’t even take into account the close familial relationship within the Bat Family itself.
