In Superman #125, the Man of Steel was caught in a blast when an alien vessel exploded, and it mucked up his powers a bit. That's the issue where he started shooting rainbows of light out of his fingers, but that was just the tip of the iceberg.

He could still fly and was invulnerable, but all of his other superpowers were gone. It turned out he wasn't actually firing off a rainbow of light, and it was something far weirder yet incredibly useful. He shot tiny versions of himself from his fingertips, and they possessed all of his normal powers.

Superman basically turned into something like an aircraft carrier — powerful on its own. Still, the ability to spit out fighters extends its range and power. Now, he could only fire a single "Superman Proxy" out of his hand at a time, but that's really all he needed, and in the book, he became jealous of it.

Ultimately, a group of bad guys try to take Superman out with some Kryptonite, but Superman Proxy throws himself in its way and knocking it into the ocean. This kills Proxy Superman, and Superman's traditional powers return to him.
