Once the Corps was well and truly established, the Guardians divided the universe into 3600 sectors. These sectors all converged on Oa as the planet was thought to be the centre of the universe.

Initially, the total number was relatively low but, after a humbling encounter with Darkseid in the past, it shot up to being similar to the number of sectors. As time passed, the number doubled to include reserve members and other special branches.

This expansion has come in handy during severe losses suffered by the group, such as during Hal Jordan's rampage as Parallax that saw the deaths of nearly every active Lantern, as well as the bloody Sinestro Corps War and Blackest Night events.
