5 Incredibly Weird Things From 60s Spider-Man Comics
1. Gwen Stacy Hates Peter Parker At First
Everyone knows Gwen Stacy as Peter Parker's first love, who acted as the Betty to Mary Jane Watson's Veronica. The most significant things she ever did was die (arguably the progenitor of Women in Refrigerators syndrome), cementing her place in Spider-Man canon as a fallen angel.
Those who only know her this way or from the recent Amazing Spider-Man movie might be surprised to know that when Gwen and Peter met as college freshmen in ASM #31, she couldn't stand him. Peter is distracted by an illness Aunt May is suffering (something that used to happen approximately all the damn time) and doesn't hear Flash Thompson, who despite his history of bullying Peter is actually trying to introduce him to the new friends hes made, Gwen and Harry Osborn. Flash jumps to the conclusion that Peter is purposely ignoring them, but Gwen gives him the benefit of the doubt.
That is, until he's a little too dismissive when lending her a pen. (Even though she was only asking as a distraction so Harry could sabotage his experiment.)
After that she makes one more attempt to talk to him, but visiting May once again takes priority. This infuriates her so much that she promises Peter will regret it, a threat worthy of any decent super villain.
It wasn't until around issue 42 when she started warming up to him. Romita had taken over art duties by then and the comic was well on its way to developing into what we all recognize today.
