8 Reasons To Look Forward To Phoenix Resurrection: The Return Of Jean Grey

3. A Chance For The Phoenix To Get Its Due

The Phoenix has been pretty much railroaded into a one-dimensional concept of late. Perhaps this'll change it.

In the last decade, the Phoenix Force itself has had something of a short shrift of it. Creative team after creative team seems to revolve around the idea of the Phoenix as a purely destructive force and totally bad news and nothing else.

Hell, Avengers vs. X-Men entirely revolved around that. The Phoenix was heading back towards Earth, so the Avengers (deciding that it was bad news by any other name) invaded a sovereign nation of mutants to try and kidnap a teenage girl because she may play host to the Phoenix - only to then cause the fragmentation of the Phoenix Force and leadi it to possess five mutants it wasn't meant to.

As a result, those mutants gradually lose their grip on reality and morality, and start to unravel, ultimately leading to the death of Charles Xavier at the hands of the possessed Cyclops. However, even afterwards, the blame for all of it got laid at the feet of Scott and the Phoenix; even though all of it could really be put down to the Avengers interfering with a god-like force because it might not have good intentions for Earth.

Even more recently, the Phoenix has been represented as capricious, malicious and threatening, and not the wider, more complex and really, more interesting entity that it has been in the past.

Hopefully Phoenix Resurrection can see that change, as it seems unlikely Marvel would return a beloved hero that fans have been asking for for years just to make her a major villain.
